The Society: The HSS Executive Office

The Executive Office manages the Society's day-to-day activities. Located in Gainesville on the campus of the University of Florida, the Office is responsible for handling the numerous administrative and communication needs of a 3,000 member organization. The Office produces the quarterly Newsletter, and handles media requests. Recently, the Executive Office has provided guidance and historical background information to newspapers such as the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, and San Jose Mercury News. The staff also cooperates with the program chairs to organize the annual meeting.

The Office is staffed by two full-time employees and three 1/3-time graduate assistants. The Society's Executive Director, Jay Malone, holds a Ph.D. from the University of Florida and has researched the development of science in the 19th century American south.

Executive Office Staff

Robert J. Malone

Robert J. Malone - Executive Director

Jay became the HSS's first executive director when he was hired in 1998. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida; his dissertation focused on the planter/naturalist William Dunbar. His work examines science in the Old Southwest (lower Mississippi River Valley) and he teaches as a visiting professor at Florida. He represents the HSS in various sister societies, such as the American Council of Learned Societies, and serves on numerous committees. He is married to the beautiful and talented Rebecca Malone, has three beautiful and talented children, and also has a terrier named Henry who, albeit neither beautiful nor talented, is loyal and strong.

Virginia Hessels
- Office Manager

Virginia has extensive office management and meeting planning experience, both at UF and in private industry. She received her B.A. in English from the University of Maryland. Her interests are english literature, creative writing and marketing. She is a member of the Society of Government Meeting Professionals, Central Florida Chapter.

Michal Meyer

Michal Meyer - Graduate Assistant

Michal grew up in Israel, Australia, and New Zealand. She started out in physics and gradually moved to history by way of weather forecasting and journalism. She is in the Ph.D. program in the history of science at the University of Florida. Her historical interests include how religion and science interact, as well as how the media help shape perceptions of science.

Matt White

Matthew White - Graduate Assistant

Matthew White is a Ph.D. student in the history of science. He comes to UF after spending almost 20 years working in museums of science and technology,
most recently as Director of the Hands On Science Center at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. His interests are in the history of science and museums and public understanding of science.

Ivana Simic

Ivana Simic - Graduate Assistant

Ivana is a Ph.D. candidate at the Philosophy Department at the University of Florida. She candidly hopes to defend the autonomy of philosophical method based on apriori intuitions from naturalistic programs in philosophy. She received her M.A. in philosophy in 2004 with a thesis on the problem of higher-order vagueness. Ivana's academic interests include Philosophical Methodology and Metaepistemology, Philosophy of Language, Metaphysics and Philosophy of
Science. Besides doing conceptual geography, Ivana also enjoys hiking and traveling
in real space.
